The Roma fan who brutally attacked Liverpool supporter Sean Cox and left him in a coma has been jailed for three and a half years.
The Irishman was assaulted by Simone Mastrelli outside Anfield stadium during last year’s Champions League semi-final tie between Liverpool FC and AS Roma.
The 53-year-old was left with a severe and traumatic brain injury that put him in a coma for almost three months.
He is still recovering from the attack.
Masterlli, 30, appeared at Preston Crown Court on February 28 and pleaded guilty to assault charges.
During sentencing, Sean Cox’s daughter, Shauna, described the impact of the attack on her dad.
“Before this brutal and vicious attack my dad was a fit and confident man. He was a man of integrity with a passion for life and represented everything that is good
“My dad went to watch his beloved team with his brother but he never came home.
“This violent and unprovoked attack left in a dire situation.
“His future his uncertain and we don’t know how he will progress and that really frightens us.”
The Italian Mastrelli, who comes from Rome, was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant and was extradited to England and charged with Section 20 assault and violent disorder.
